Yame Sudare BlindsWoodwork/bamboo work
Sudare, or bamboo blinds, are said to have been introduced to Japan in the 8th century by Japanese envoys to Sui Dynasty China. During the Heian period (end of the 8th century - 12th century), they were essential features of the houses of the nobility, serving as partitions between rooms. In the Yame area during the 19th century, production of bamboo ware was at a high, and blinds were being produced here using thin rods of bamboo. More recently, they are used in a variety of settings, including traditional Japanese inns and stores, and are sold in Japan and overseas as luxury items for general households, shrines and temples.
