The skill of master craftsmen on display
Traditional crafts are made using technologies and techniques handed down over centuries using tools and materials that have changed little over the years. However, at the same time, these dynamic creations are constantly evolving with the times according to changes in people’s lifestyles. The Takumi Gallery is home to a permanent exhibition displaying 7 kinds of nationally-designated crafts and 35 kinds of prefecturally-designated crafts from Fukuoka Prefecture. These include everything from woven items and pottery to dolls and toys, with each work providing unique insights into the regional characteristics, customs and history of Fukuoka.
The gallery also holds weekly exhibitions of works by craft artists from Fukuoka Prefecture. At every stage of production, these works are all made using methods that have remained largely unchanged for generations. No two works are the same and are imbued with a sense of warmth that can only come from items that have been made lovingly produced by hand. With demonstrations and workshops also on offer, visitors can experience traditional crafts first hand under the guidance of their creators. Some of the items on display are available for purchase, making the perfect souvenir for your visit to Fukuoka.
During your visit to the gallery, you are sure to find many traditional craftworks that will enrich both your life and spirit.
