Akasaka DollsDolls

Akasaka dolls were created in the 18th century by Akasaka ware ceramists simply as a hobby. The area later flourished as a center of production in the Kurume Domain. These dolls were known colloquially as "Teteppoppo," meaning "ham-fisted person" in Chikugo's old dialect. As this name suggests, these coarse unglazed pottery figurines contain simple colors and plenty of rustic charm, retaining the protruding sections from when they were put into the mold.
